AYURVEDIC VATA SPICE BLEND FOR HOLIDAY SEASON DIGESTIVE HEALTH

We all know how difficult it can be to stay 100% committed to eating healthy during the holidays when you are invited to a stream of parties where you know there will be countless options of rich foods, sweet treats and cocktails. Of course part of the joy of attending these events is getting to indulge in these feasts while reuniting with your friends, colleagues and loved ones - and this should be done free of guilt!

From an Ayurvedic perspective, part of good nutritional hygiene is knowing how to counterbalance the ill effects that certain foods, improper food combining and overindulging can have on your body. As we have now fully entered Vata season (late fall and early winter), I am suggesting you add the Vata Churna (herb & spice blend) to your regular meals to fully support your digestion and as an effective remedy for calming tummy troubles you may be experiencing at this time such as gas, bloating, constipation and lower abdominal pain - all typical Vata symptoms. Ideally, chose organic spices and herbs for your Churna.

Most important of all, wether picking at a giant holiday buffet or enjoying a quiet meal at home, make sure you eat mindfully! This will greatly influence your digestive health throughout the party season.

VATA DIGESTIVE SPICE BLEND - (VATA CHURNA)

Ingredients:

  • 2 tbsp cumin seeds
  • 2 tbsp fennel seeds
  • 1 tbsp fenugreek seeds
  • 1 tablespoon ground turmeric
  • 1 tablespoon dried basil
  • 2 teaspoons ground ginger
  • 1 tsp rock salt
  • 1 tsp black pepper
  • 1 tsp asafoetida (hing)

Method:

Place all of the spices in an electric grinder and grind them until you obtain a powdery consistency. Pour the blend into a small stainless steal tin or glass container and blend a few more times with a  spoon to combine further. Transfer to an airtight container and store at room temperature. It is best to use the mixture within a month for optimal potency.
